Formosa was built by the Portuguese in 1511 after Admiral Alfonso D Albuquerque managed to capture the Malay sultanate of Malacca. It was built as a fort and is supposed to prevent the Portuguese garrison to be attacked by the men of the sultan. Some parts of the fort was deemed to be fifteen feet thick and as many feet below the earth as well! In 1641, Dutch, with the support of the Sultan of Johor forces, has managed to wow the command of Portuguese fort. Due to heavy shelling, much of the fort was destroyed. The Dutch ordered the place for 150 years, until they have ceded to the English in 1824.The British forces then destroyed one that remains of the fort, except the door, which had the coats of arms Dutch. The door remains to this day. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Malacca today. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to break a picture of this because it remains a historic building that is 500 years.
